What you will learn
- check_circleThe kessan tanshin (earnings summary) is released on TDnet on results day. Its figures are unaudited.
- check_circleThe yuho (annual securities report) is filed on EDINET about three months after period end. It is audited.
- check_circleZENITH Code returns summary figures first and replaces them once the annual report arrives.

Why there are two
Listed Japanese companies disclose the same results through two channels. They serve different purposes, so timing and content differ.
The kessan tanshin (earnings summary) is a timely disclosure required by exchange rules. It is published on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's TDnet on results day, to inform investors quickly.
The yuho (annual securities report) is a statutory filing under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. It is audited and filed on EDINET, run by the Financial Services Agency.
Quarterly securities reports for Q1 and Q3 were abolished from fiscal 2024. Since then, Q1 and Q3 figures are disclosed only in earnings summaries.
The differences at a glance
In short, the earnings summary is fast but unaudited, while the annual report is slower, audited and far more detailed.
| Aspect | Earnings summary (TDnet) | Annual securities report (EDINET) |
|---|---|---|
| Basis | Exchange timely-disclosure rules | Financial Instruments and Exchange Act (statutory) |
| Operator | Japan Exchange Group (TSE) | Financial Services Agency |
| Timing | Results day, roughly 1–2 months after period end | Roughly 3 months after period end (late June for March year-ends) |
| Audit | Unaudited | Audited |
| Main content | Key statements, earnings guidance, dividend guidance | Every line item and note, segments, major shareholders, officers, employees |
| Quarters | Q1–Q3 and full year | Full year (Q2 has a semiannual report) |
ZENITH Code provenance.source | tdnet | edinet |
Timings are typical ranges and vary by company and period.
How ZENITH Code merges them
ZENITH Code ingests both documents and builds one row per fiscal period. You get the speed of the summary and the accuracy of the audited report from a single endpoint.
- For the same stock, fiscal period and quarter, the most recently filed disclosure wins. When the annual report arrives, it replaces the summary figures.
- Replacement happens per category (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow and so on). The latest disclosure that actually carries numbers becomes that category's source.
- Earnings and dividend guidance always come from the earnings summary, because annual reports do not carry company guidance.
- Items that only the annual report has, such as segments and major shareholders, are added from it.

When data is updated
Financial and dividend datasets are monitored for freshness daily against 16:30 (TDnet) and 19:00 (EDINET), Japan time. Market-wide aggregates are rebuilt at 16:45 and 19:45.
The API reflects TDnet-based data daily by 16:30 and EDINET-based data daily by 19:00 (Japan time). Summaries released after 16:30 are reflected in the next update.
The timely-disclosure list (disclosures) is checked for freshness every hour.
These timings are estimates based on the processing schedule and observed runs, not a guarantee. Outages or late corrections by the company can shift them.
Example: Toyota Motor (7203)
Toyota's income statement for the fiscal year ended March 2026 has provenance.source set to edinet. Its figures were replaced by the annual report filed on June 10, 2026 (document ID S100Y8NY).
Its guidance for Q1 of the fiscal year ending March 2027 comes from the earnings summary released on August 4, 2026. Full-year guidance is ¥54 trillion in revenue and ¥3.4 trillion in operating income.
The same company can have different sources for different items and dates. Always check the source along with the number.
| Data | Fiscal period | Source | Published |
|---|---|---|---|
| Income statement (full year) | 2026-03 / FY | edinet (annual report) | 2026-06-10 |
| Guidance (current full year) | 2026-06 / Q1 | Earnings summary | 2026-08-04 |

Telling the source apart in the API
Financial endpoints such as income-statement attach provenance to every row. source is the kind of document, docId the document ID and announcedAt the publication time.
For EDINET documents, sourceUrl links to the original filing. The list of TDnet documents is available from disclosures.

}Caveats
- Earnings summaries are unaudited. Figures can change before the annual report is filed.
- ZENITH Code returns the latest merged value. It does not keep a separate copy of the figure as first published in the summary.
nullmeans not disclosed, not zero. Summaries often omit detailed line items, so some fields staynulluntil the annual report arrives.- TDnet documents themselves (PDFs and text) are subject to the companies' and the exchange's terms. If you display them in your own service, check our terms and data source conditions.
FAQ
For investors and developers
- Can the earnings summary and the annual report show different numbers?
- Yes. The summary is an unaudited preliminary release and can be revised in the annual report. In ZENITH Code the value is replaced when the annual report arrives, and
provenance.sourcechanges toedinet. - Which document do Q1 figures come from?
- The earnings summary. Quarterly securities reports for Q1 and Q3 were abolished from fiscal 2024, so the summary is the only source for those quarters.
- Can I get the numbers through the API on results day?
- In most cases, yes. TDnet-based data is reflected around 16:30 (Japan time) on the announcement day. Summaries released later are reflected in the next update.
For AI builders and researchers
- What should I pass to an AI so it can cite sources?
- Pass
source, docIdandannouncedAtfromprovenancetogether with the numbers. For EDINET documents, sourceUrlopens the original. The model can then say which document and date a figure came from. - How do I check how current the data is?
- The
X-Data-As-Ofresponse header gives the dataset's as-of time, andX-Data-Versionits version. A version change means the data was updated, for example when summary figures were replaced by the annual report. - Can research use both the summary-time figure and the audited figure?
- The financial endpoints return only the latest merged value and do not keep the summary-time version. Every line item of the annual report is available from financial-facts and financial-statement-full.
