TSE 33 sectors

Sector data: the 33 TSE sectors and their medians

For each of the 33 Tokyo Stock Exchange sectors, the API returns medians and quartiles of PER, PBR, ROE, dividend yield and other metrics. This page lists the sectors and explains how the statistics are computed.

Key points

  • check_circleA list of the 33 TSE sectors with their 4-digit codes. Each sector page shows the metric medians and quartiles and how they are defined.
  • check_circleThe statistics come from /stable/industry-benchmarks, which covers common stocks only and excludes outliers before computing medians and quartiles.
  • check_circlePublic pages show sector aggregates only. Look up individual companies through the API or the screener.
The table shows aggregates fetched on October 25, 2026. The API snapshot is rebuilt at 16:45 and 19:45 Japan time, Monday to Saturday.

Why compare within a sector

Typical PER and PBR levels differ widely between sectors. Whether a company's value is high or low is easier to judge against its own sector's distribution.

ZENITH Code returns each sector's median and quartiles in one call. Because it uses medians rather than means, a few extreme companies do not distort the reference point.

Metric definitions and method

ZENITH Code computes the median, first quartile and third quartile of these 10 metrics for every sector. The API returns ratios as 0–1 decimals; this table shows them as percentages.

Metric (unit)DefinitionValues used
PER (x)Price-to-earnings ratio: the share price as a multiple of earnings per share.0 or below (e.g. losses) excluded
PBR (x)Price-to-book ratio: the share price as a multiple of book value per share.0 or below (e.g. negative equity) excluded
PSR (x)Price-to-sales ratio: market cap as a multiple of revenue.0 or below excluded
EV/EBITDA (x)Enterprise value as a multiple of EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization).0 or below excluded
ROE (%)Return on equity: net income as a percentage of shareholders' equity.Above 100% excluded (negatives kept)
ROA (%)Return on assets: profit as a percentage of total assets.Above 100% excluded (negatives kept)
Dividend yield (%)Dividend per share as a percentage of the share price.0 or below (no dividend) and above 100% excluded, so it describes dividend payers
Market cap (¥100M)Share price × shares outstanding, a measure of company size. The API returns yen.0 or below excluded
3-year revenue growth (%)Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of revenue over three years. All finite values kept
3-year EPS growth (%)Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of earnings per share over three years. All finite values kept
  • check_circleOnly common stocks are included. ETFs and REITs are excluded.
  • check_circleQuartiles use linear interpolation (the same method as Excel's PERCENTILE.INC and numpy's default), rounded to six decimals.
  • check_circleIf fewer than three valid values remain after removing outliers, the median and quartiles are null. The number of valid values (…Count) is still returned.
  • check_circleMeans, maximums and minimums are not returned, because medians and quartiles are robust to extreme values.
  • check_circleThe input is the same latest-value snapshot that the screener (/stable/screener) uses.

Fetch every sector with the API

Without sector, the response starts with an all-sector (ALL) row followed by the 33 sectors. Each call uses 10 tokens.

Code example
curl -sG "https://api.zenithcode.net/stable/industry-benchmarks" \
  -H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY"

Things to note

  • errornull means "cannot be computed", not zero. Metrics with fewer than three valid values or no data are null.
  • errorThe dividend yield median covers dividend payers only, so it is higher than an average across the whole sector.
  • errorSector price performance (/stable/sector-performance) is exchange data and is not shown on this page. Sign in and use the API to get it.
  • errorSectors follow the TSE 33-sector classification based on each company's main business. Diversified companies may not look like typical members of their sector.

FAQ for investors and developers

Where can I find the TSE 33-sector codes?expand_more

In the list on this page and from /stable/available-sectors. Codes have four digits and can be passed as the sector parameter.

Which endpoint returns sector medians of PER and PBR?expand_more

/stable/industry-benchmarks. Omit sector for every sector, or pass a code such as sector=3650 for one row.

How do I list the companies in a sector?expand_more

Call /stable/screener with sector. The screener on this site can also filter by sector.

FAQ for AI builders and researchers

How are the medians and quartiles computed?expand_more

Common stocks only, outliers removed, then linear interpolation over the sorted valid values (same as PERCENTILE.INC). If fewer than three valid values remain, the result is null.

When is the data updated?expand_more

The underlying snapshot is rebuilt at 16:45 and 19:45 Japan time, Monday to Saturday. Check /stable/system/freshness for each dataset's as-of time.

What should an AI answer include when citing these figures?expand_more

State the date fetched and that the values are aggregates with outliers removed. Ratios are 0–1 decimals in the API; multiply by 100 for percentages.
